footnotes:

-pants are April May for Monoprix. (It's the target of Paris) $60.

-I neglected Gap for 8 yrs. I recently returned and really love their attention to the cool basics. sweet prices too.

-you can get a great men's collared shirt, cheaply, at the Gap. tuck it into your jeans. And they have some nice pants if your not afraid to depart from the skin-tight skinny jeans. embrace Gap's boxy.loose fits. for me, it's been a refreshing experience.

-vintage loafers & wingtip oxfords are sold on ebay

-eureka. i have just come to the conclusion that the reason why people admire french style is quite possibly b/c the french don't over-accessorize. they know exactly when enough is enough. what do you think?

just some thoughts.

your mum is absolutely right...(sometimes just a simple white shirt and jeans can be fabulous).
and i agree with the your footnote re: about the French not over accessorizing...

Classics certainly can be refreshing and stylish. I recently spent a Saturday in Paris with my most favorite fashion friend, Luisa Bezzi. Always an inspiration, Luisa was clothed in classic khakis with a flannel check shirt and contrasting plaid wool scarf. It was the cool way she tucked the shirt and mixed the check with the plaid that gave the look an interesting twist. She is the style maven of Milan. Check her out on the BBC show THE REAL....

all this talk of style--hah!--if you don't have the body for it doesn't matter what you wear... Think an obese person is chic in Prada? Nope... That may be crass and insensitive, but let's get real--most people not only do not know how to wear well what they have they don't have the body to wear clothes well... slender people can get away wearing most anything...so let's talk about form and function with regard to fashion...in digression women have been duped into the whole fashion/cosmetic/accessories game and what's it got them? heartache and distorted self-image of ther body...

you've got a point.

but I do believe 90% of beautiful is how people carry themselves. Grace, style, intelligence and attitude is extremely influential on others. And a sense of humor is key!

My grandmother is 80 yrs old and looks killer because she follows these 3 simple rules.

1. hold your shoulders back

2. smile more.

3. project confidence.

I think confidence, elegance and a warm personality, makes people extremely attractive and helps them rock that prada skirt.

The media world won't change overnight. Advertising is an art of extremes, imagination and unrealistic ideals. It's our responsibility to be smart and take what we want from it. or nothing at all. we have a choice.

Regardless of age or body size, true beauty is projected from the soul of an individual. Life experiences, knowledge, friendships and passions contribute more honestly to the image we project. Fashion is is just the icing on the cake!

This edit caught my attention as well, I almost saved it and now your post made me wish I had!
It's interesting to have your view on the Gap, as the collections we have here in France are completely different (save for the Pierre Hardy designed shoes I think.). I'm always a bit miffed by the "made at the other end of the world" tags though...
