I learn so much from friends

I admire their
passion / POV

I carefully study their technique,
approach to subject matter,
visual communication

Tyler Manson,
a friend and filmmaker
has influenced my awareness
of composition and storytelling
in the film format

quiet, minimal, intimate

even for the
non-surfer, you find
yourself wanting to listen

I have learned that
like architecture, surfing
is an art and science

its about design,
proportions relative
to nature and the zen
of letting it all go to
catch the wave

leitchen is to tree as
drama is to architecture

I think my 10th grade science
teacher called this relationship:

mutualistic-symbiosis

when two different organisms
can't live without the other.

3 episodes of such

1. scaling the eiffel tower
in rené clair's paris qui dort

2. classical symmetry in
last year in marienbad

3. a Christ statue

at the same time,
daring and imaginative
unprecedented

in praise of

theatre, irony,
homage, surreality
in interior spaces

do you see where I'm going with this...

I'm still hung up on europe.

the light, the composition of space.
the paring of materials, proportions,
the subconscious nod to history.

why do I make such
blanket, broad, vague
ambiguous statements?

1. i'm inarticulate
2. i'm changing

I'm unable to
express a new shift
in my aesthetic.

what once was boring
to me has suddenly become
illuminating, enlightening
my greatest muse yet!

has this ever happened to you?

I'm embarrassed to say
that I have built a building
without a foundation.

in school,
i slept through all of
classical european art and
awoke for 20th century
architecture.

I must relearn the abc's
remix my palette, change
my tennis grip, etc. ha!

I need your help

share with me
1 thing i should know
about the early days of art.

...an artist, a painting
an event, a town, a method,
that you think is invaluable to
the history art and the way we
perceive the world today...

there is something about european art.

ah!
can you help
me pin point it?

I have this feeling
that we americans,
never quite get it.
or achieve it

even when we try.

mid-century is overplayed.
I would like to see more surreal,
classical, dare i say, baroque interiors?

give me history
irony, passion,
cinema!

the amazing technicolor dreamcoat

gravel & gold

when I return to the bay
it's a necessity to visit the gold girls.
Lisa, Cassie and Nile represent
everything I love about SF

humble
warm, funky
generous

from my mother's stories,
gravel & gold makes me think
of the first hippie dress shops
in mill valley, sausalito
haight ashbury

imagine,
augustin lesage
and the mamas of
the papas opening
a store together

no new age hippie garb here.
they have an incredibly sophisticated
sensibility for local craft, vintage
textiles, and striped shirts

a dress story

when i was 18
my mother's friend, lusia,
from Milan, gave me the first
dress she ever made.

an original
liberty print.
1972.

luisa is now a big
designer so it means
a lot to be the sole owner
of this incredible piece.

although, i've never worn it.
maybe because I was saving
it for an occasion like this.

I like to stick my hands
in its deep pockets

so bohemian

ps: I would share more pics
but I know some of you
will be at the wedding!

vanguard journalism

Something has been on my mind
for the past couple of months

our dear friend's
Laura Ling & Euna Lee
have been detained in
North Korea since march,
and they face trial
June 4

as you may know,
we have no diplomatic
relations with N. Korea

it seems like yesterday
we're all having dinner in nyc,
sharing adventures...
celebrating.

gosh we miss
them terribly and
we already feel a
great void in
journalism

tonight
and every night
until they are free,
light a candle with us
or in private

west with the night

I have learned that if you must leave
a place that you have lived in and loved
and where all your yesterdays
are buried deep...

leave it any way except a slow way
leave it the fastest way you can

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3159/2649639275_6a43378520.jpg

never turn back.
and never believe that an hour
you remember is a better hour
because its dead.

while the future lives in a cloud,
